Hiamachal Motorcycle Tour

Himachal Pradesh offers some of the most diverse and stunning motorcycle touring routes in the world. The ultimate 13-day ride in Himachal is the Kinnaur-Spiti-Lahaul Circuit, often called the "Full Himachal Loop". This route takes you from the lush green valleys near Shimla to the treacherous cliffs of Kinnaur, through the barren cold desert of Spiti, and over the high passes of Lahaul. Here is a detailed 14-days itinerary for this epic Himachal motorcycle tour, starting and ending near Shimla/Chandigarh. This itinerary focuses purely on Himachal Pradesh, maximizing cultural and scenic diversity while prioritizing acclimatization.

Itinerary

  • Part 1: The Green Belt & Kinnaur (Days 1–6)
Arrive in New Delhi, check into hotel and rest. Use this day for last-minute checks on your gear and permits.
Arrive at the starting point (Shimla or Narkanda). Bike allocation and test ride. Relax and acclimatize to the moderate altitude (2,700 m).
Enter Kinnaur Valley via the infamous Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5). Ride alongside the Sutlej River. The roads here are often challenging (cliff-cut sections) and thrilling.
Morning ride to Chitkul (3,450 m), the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibet border. Then ride to Kalpa, famous for its majestic view of the Kinner Kailash peak.
The landscape dramatically changes from green apple orchards to barren, rocky mountains. Pass the confluence of the Sutlej and Spiti rivers at Khab Bridge. Visit the peaceful Nako Lake (3,660 m).
Official entry into Spiti Valley. Visit the 1000-year-old Tabo Monastery (the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'). Pass the village of Giu to see the famous preserved mummy monk. Arrive at the capital, Kaza (3,800 m).
Part 2: Spiti Valley Exploration (Days 7–10)

Full day exploring the high-altitude villages: Langza (iconic Buddha statue), Hikkim (world's highest post office), and Komic (Asia’s highest village connected by road).
Visit the majestic Ki Monastery (Kye Gompa). Cross the dramatic Chicham Bridge (Asia's highest suspension bridge). Ride to Pin Valley National Park and the village of Mudh.
A challenging but iconic ride. Ride through the winding roads to Lotha and then cross the formidable Kunzum La Pass (4,551 m). Camp near Chandratal (Moon Lake) (4,300 m).
Ride the notoriously difficult Batal-Gramphu road (water crossings and bad roads). Join the Manali-Leh Highway at Gramphu and ride to the green Lahaul Valley. Keylong/Jispa (3,200 m) offers a welcome break.
Off-the-beaten-path day. Ride into the remote Chenab Valley (Lahaul) to Udaipur. This is a highly scenic route with fewer tourists, offering a true sense of exploration
Head back towards the main highway. Pass through Keylong and then use the Atal Tunnel to bypass the difficult Rohtang Pass, descending into the lush Kullu Valley and Manali.
Rest day. Check your bike, catch up on laundry, and explore Manali town. Visit Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, or Vashisht Hot Springs. Final ride marking the end of your incredible Himachal ride.
Take your flight from Bhuntar Airport near Manali to New Delhi. Reach your hotel at Delhi. Stay Overnight. Now you can continue your onward journey.

Essential Motorbike Touring Tips for the Himachal Circuit

Best Time to Go: Mid-June to Mid-October. Outside this window, high passes like Kunzum La will be closed due to snow. September is often considered the best month for clear weather.
Acclimatization: The Kinnaur route (Shimla to Kaza) is excellent for acclimatization because it provides a gradual gain in altitude, which is safer than the abrupt ascent via Manali.
Inner Line Permit (ILP): You will need an Inner Line Permit if you are a foreign national. This is typically obtained in Reckong Peo (near Kalpa) or Shimla. Carry multiple photocopies of your license, bike documents, ID, and the permit itself.
Fuel Availability: Fuel is consistently available in Rampur, Reckong Peo, Kaza, and Keylong/Manali. There are long stretches between Kaza and Keylong, so carry at least 5 liters of extra fuel on that section.
Road Conditions: Expect everything: butter-smooth tarmac, slushy river crossings, sharp gravel, and treacherous cliff-hanging sections, especially in Kinnaur and on the Batal-Gramphu road. The Royal Enfield Himalayan is a popular and suitable choice for this terrain.
