North-West India Motorcycle Tour

Rajasthan is one of the most culturally rich and visually spectacular states in India for motorcycle touring. The roads are generally excellent, allowing you to cover long distances comfortably, while the historical depth and unique desert landscapes offer a truly royal adventure. A 15-day itinerary is perfect for completing the Classic Royal Circuit (Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer) and including the hidden gems like Pushkar, Mandawa, and the Aravalli hills. Here is a detailed 15-day itinerary for a motorbike tour of Rajasthan, typically starting and ending in the capital, Jaipur. This itinerary is designed for riders, balancing long rides with dedicated sightseeing days in the major cities, and focusing on the transition between the vibrant Aravalli hills and the deep Thar Desert. This route offers the perfect blend of historical grandeur, cultural immersion, and classic Indian motorbike adventure.

Itinerary

  • Part 1: Palaces, Lakes, and Hills (The South)
Arrive in New Delhi, check into hotel and rest. Use this day for last-minute checks on your gear and permits.
Arrive in Jaipur ("Pink City"). Bike check-in, paperwork, and test ride. Explore the local market (Johari Bazaar) and prepare for the journey.
Visit Amber Fort (ride up early), Hawa Mahal, and the City Palace. Get out of the city traffic early to visit the Nahargarh Fort for sunset views over the Pink City.
A relatively easy ride. Visit Ajmer Sharif Dargah en route. Reach Pushkar, a sacred town known for its Holy Lake and the only Brahma Temple in India.
Longest Riding Day. Cruise along NH-58/NH-48. This stretch is generally good tarmac. Arrive at the "City of Lakes" and check into accommodation near Lake Pichola.
Rest Day. Park the bike and explore on foot. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola, visit the City Palace, and enjoy a rooftop dinner with views of the Lake Palace.
Best Riding Day. A short, scenic ride into the Aravalli Hills. Visit the magnificent Kumbhalgarh Fort, which boasts the second-longest continuous wall in the world (after the Great Wall of China).
Ride through the Aravalli hills, often passing through forests and tribal villages. Stop at Ranakpur Jain Temple with its intricately carved pillars en route. Arrive in Jodhpur ("Blue City").
Part 2: Desert, Forts, and Havelis (The West & North)

Visit the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, which dominates the cityscape. Explore the blue alleyways of the old city and the bustling Clock Tower Market.
The Desert Ride. Head straight west into the Thar Desert. The roads are fast and straight, perfect for enjoying the open throttle. The Golden City of Jaisalmer appears like a mirage on the horizon.
Morning sightseeing: Jaisalmer Fort (India's only 'living fort') and Patwon Ki Haveli. Afternoon ride out to Sam Sand Dunes for a sunset camel safari and an authentic desert camp stay.
Another long desert ride. Ride back through the arid Thar region. Bikaner is famous for its fortified city. Visit the Junagarh Fort on arrival.
Head into the Shekhawati Region, known as the "Open-Air Art Gallery of Rajasthan." Stay in a beautiful converted heritage Haveli (mansion).
The Final Push. Ride east towards the state border. Stay near Bharatpur (Keoladeo National Park for bird lovers) or Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambore National Park for a tiger safari option).
Short ride back to the original starting point in Jaipur, or continue on a long, straight highway to Delhi for onward travel. Tour ends. Stay in hotel in New Delhi. Now you can continue your onward journey.

Essential Motorbike Touring Tips for Rajasthan

Best Time to Visit: December to February. This is non-negotiable. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (high 27 °C), making the long rides enjoyable. Avoid April-October due to extreme heat.
The Bike: The Royal Enfield 500cc is the iconic choice for this route, offering comfort and authenticity. The RE Himalayan is also excellent for handling the rural and sandy stretches.
Get these in advance: The ILP/PAP must be obtained in advance from Guwahati or Kolkata (or online, depending on current rules) before your tour starts. You will not be allowed past the check gates without them.
Road Conditions: Mostly excellent national highways (NH) with great tarmac, particularly between Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur. However, expect heavy city traffic, livestock (camels, cows), and unpredictable rural roads (sand, gravel) near Jaisalmer and Mandawa.
