North-East IndiaMotorcycle Tour

Northeast India, often called the "Seven Sisters," is a truly frontier destination for motorbike touring, offering lush green mountains, tribal culture, and highly scenic, winding roads. For a 14-day tour, the best focus is the Arunachal Pradesh Circuit (Tawang), combined with the culture and wildlife of Assam, as this region offers the most diverse and spectacular riding challenges within the timeframe. Here is the best 15-day itinerary, starting and ending in Guwahati (Assam), the main entry point to the region. This route covers the plains of Assam, the steep mountains and high passes of Arunachal Pradesh, and the rich wildlife of the region. This itinerary offers a profound glimpse into the culture, challenge, and immense beauty of India's Northeast frontier.

Itinerary

  • Part 1: Assam and the Foothills (Days 1–4)
Arrival in New Delhi. Stay at hotel.
Arrive at Guwahati (Assam). Bike pickup/test ride and paperwork (Essential for Inner Line Permit application). Visit the Kamakhya Temple (optional).
A smooth highway ride across the mighty Brahmaputra River to Tezpur. Acclimatize to the bikes and the humid climate before heading to the mountains.
Enter Arunachal Pradesh. The roads turn winding and scenic. Ride through the lush forests of the foothills. Final checks before ascending to the high mountains.
Part 2: The Tawang Ascent (Days 5–8)

A short but scenic ride, allowing time to visit the Dirang Dzong (a traditional stone fortress) and explore the local Monpa culture and monasteries. Altitude acclimatization begins.
The most challenging and rewarding day. Cross the formidable Sela Pass (4,170 m / 13,700 ft), often snow-covered. Pass the beautiful Sela Lake. Arrive in the high mountain town of Tawang.
Rest Day. Visit the magnificent Tawang Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the second largest in the world. Visit the Tawang War Memorial.
Optional: Ride to Bumla Pass (4,633 m), the Indo-China border (requires a separate military permit on the spot). Alternatively, visit the spectacular Shonga-tser Lake (Madhuri Lake).
Part 3: Descent and Wildlife (Days 9–12)

Descend Sela Pass. Enjoy the stunning mountain views and the winding roads in reverse. A relatively long day back to the lower altitude of Bomdila.
Descend completely from the mountains back into the plains of Assam. Stay near Nameri National Park on the banks of the Jia Bharali River.
A scenic ride through the tea gardens of Assam. Check into your lodge near Kaziranga. Activity: Evening explore the local villages and markets.
Non-Riding Day. Take an early morning Jeep Safari or Elephant Safari into the national park, famous for the One-Horned Rhinoceros.
Part 4: Return and Departure (Days 13–15)

Enter Meghalaya ("Abode of the Clouds"). A long ride, including a highway stretch, followed by the ascent to the hill capital, Shillong.
Day trip to the wettest place on earth. Visit Cherrapunji's waterfalls, or ride to Mawlynnong ("Asia’s Cleanest Village") and the Living Root Bridges. Return to Shillong. Ride ends here.
Flight for New Delhi. Stay overnight. Tour ends here. You can continue your onward journey from here.

Northeast India Riding Essentials

Inner Line Permit (ILP): Mandatory for all Indian citizens (except residents of Arunachal Pradesh) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
Protected Area Permit (PAP): Mandatory for all foreign nationals to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
Get these in advance: The ILP/PAP must be obtained in advance from Guwahati or Kolkata (or online, depending on current rules) before your tour starts. You will not be allowed past the check gates without them.
Best Time to Visit: October to April. The weather is dry and pleasant. Avoid the peak monsoon (June–September) as roads become treacherous due to landslides. December and January are very cold, especially at Sela Pass.
Bike Choice: A sturdy, reliable bike is essential. The Royal Enfield Himalayan or a robust dual-sport bike is highly recommended for handling the steep climbs, low-oxygen environment, and poor road conditions after Tezpur.
Road Conditions: Expect mixed conditions: good highways in Assam, but poor, broken, steep, and sometimes dirt/gravel tracks in the Arunachal mountains, especially near Sela Pass.
Altitude: Tawang is at 3,048 m, and you cross Sela Pass at over 4,000 m. Acclimatize slowly, stay hydrated, and carry necessary medication.
