South India Motorcycle Tour

South India, comprising the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, is a paradise for motorcyclists, offering a rich blend of coastline, dense spice and tea plantations, twisty hill roads (Ghats), and ancient temple architecture. The best 14-day route for South India is the "Spice and Tea Route", which starts on the East Coast (Tamil Nadu/Puducherry) and ends on the West Coast (Kerala/Kochi), maximizing the contrast between the three regions. Here is a detailed 14-day itinerary, focusing on the winding Western Ghats roads, culture, and coastal relaxation.

Itinerary

  • Part 1: Tamil Nadu Coast & Hill Climbs (Days 1–5)
Arrive at Chennai airport. Meet the bikes (Royal Enfield is the classic choice).
Easy Ride along the East Coast Road (ECR) to the UNESCO heritage site of Mahabalipuram. Explore the rock-cut temples in Mahabalipuram in the morning. Arrive in Puducherry to explore the distinct French Quarter and Promenade Beach.
Thrilling Ride Day. Leave the coast and head inland towards the Eastern Ghats. The highlight is the ascent to Kolli Hills, conquering the famous 70 continuous hairpin bends (a motorcycling challenge).
Scenic ride through the plains, followed by the ascent to the beautiful hill station of Kodaikanal ("Princess of Hill Stations"). Enjoy riding the forested slopes and pine plantations.
Cultural Day. Descend the hills back to the plains of Tamil Nadu. Spend the afternoon exploring the magnificent Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, a marvel of Dravidian architecture.
Part 2: Kerala’s Ghats and Spice Routes (Days 6–10)

The Green Transition. Cross the state border into Kerala. This is an incredibly scenic climb through valleys that transition into the endless green of the tea estates surrounding Munnar.
Rest Day. Explore the highest tea plantations. Ride to Top Station for panoramic views or visit the Eravikulam National Park to spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.
Spice Route. A short but deeply immersive ride through cardamom, pepper, and coffee plantations of the Cardamom Hills. Take a spice plantation tour in the afternoon.
Backwater Cruise. Descend the Western Ghats to the coastal backwaters of Kerala. Park the bikes and enjoy a relaxing houseboat cruise overnight in the tranquil backwaters of Alleppey.
Coastal Ride. Leave the backwaters and follow the coastal road south. Arrive at Varkala, famous for its stunning red laterite cliffs towering over the Arabian Sea.
Part 3: Return Loop via the Nilgiris (Days 11–14)

Ride north along the coast to the historic port city of Kochi. Explore Fort Kochi's colonial architecture, the Chinese fishing nets, and Jew Town.
Climb to Nilgiris. A full day's ride that takes you back into the high mountains of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Arrive at Ooty ("Queen of Hill Stations").
Descend the famous 36 hairpin bends of the Nilgiris road. Ride through the Mudumalai/Bandipur Tiger Reserve (strictly follow speed limits and watch for wildlife). Arrive in Mysuru (Karnataka).
Visit the majestic Mysore Palace in the morning. Take the final ride to the international airport city Bengaluru. Stay overnight. You can continue your onward journey from here.

South India Motorbike Touring Essentials

Best Time to Visit: December to February. The weather is dry, sunny, and warm on the coast, and pleasantly cool in the mountains. Avoid the monsoon season (June–September) due to heavy rain, landslides, and reduced visibility on the Ghats.
The Bike: The Royal Enfield Classic 350/500 or the Himalayan are the most common and best-suited bikes for this varied terrain, offering reliability for both long highway stretches and demanding hairpin climbs.
Road Conditions: Roads are generally well-maintained tarmac (especially National Highways and the Ghat roads), but expect winding, slow-paced roads in the plantations and crowded traffic in the coastal cities.
This route promises a spectacular adventure, transitioning from the history of the Bay of Bengal to the serene Arabian Sea, all while traversing the aromatic high ranges of the Western Ghats.
